Having
graduated from 8th Grade in May 1953, we began our Freshman year in September
1954 at Russellville High School. We were mostly 13 or 14 years old. It
seemed like a big step up for all of us. We looked up to the Seniors, Juniors,
and even Sophomores, all veterans of RHS. Mrs. Geneva Helm ("Miss Geneva")
continued as our 9th grade home room teacher.
Mrs. Geneva Helm For most of us the subjects that year were
Mrs. Eleanor Piper, Mrs. Kay Lyle Stengell, Mrs. Helen Carpenter Extracurricular activities included football or basketball (under Coaches Harold Hunter or B. H. Weaver), band or chorus (under Mrs. Hazel Carver), and the freshman comedy"A Date for Bobby Sox," presented in the Auditorium April 6, 1954 to the student body. Characters in that play were 14-year-old Bobby Sox on her first date (Ann Goddard), her boyfriend Harold (Jim Watlington), older sister Margie (Ann Piper), their mother Mrs. Hanna (Lucy Franklin), and father Mr. Hanna (Andy Mac Rector). The Panther Chatter recorded that the audience enjoyed the performance.
