Here are some bits of 1958 history that surrounded our graduation that year.


Dwight D. Eisenhower was President of the United States and Richard M. Nixon was Vice President. Speaker of the House of Representatives was Sam T. Rayburn.
The Governor of Kentucky was A. B. "Happy" Chandler. Kentucky's U.S. Senators were John Sherman Cooper and Thurston Morton. Our State Representative was Paul Young and State Senator was John Willis.


In 1958 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Georges Henri Pire, a Belgian Dominican priest who led the Belgian resistance movement during WW II. James Agee won the Pulitzer Prize that year for his book "A Death in the Family." Best Actress was Susan Hayward in "I Want to Live" and Best Actor was David Niven in "Separate Tables."
In 1958, life expectancy was 69.6 years.


1958 World News Headlines


France approves the creation of a new government, the Fifth Republic; voters named Charles de Gaulle the new President.
Nikita Khrushchev became the Premier of the U.S.S.R.
President Eisenhower sent troops to Lebanon.


1958 National News


The United States launched its first satellite. The National Advisory Council on Aeronautics (NACA) was renamed NASA.
Pizza Hut opened its first store in Kansas City, Missouri.
Elvis Presley was inducted into the Army.
Arkansas Governor Faubus shut down Little Rock schools.
